Class Description

BPI Building Envelope standards overview course is designed for the experienced building science professional, technical tester or certified HERS Rater or HERS Field Inspector. The course includes a thorough review of BPI specifications and program standards followed by the 2-hour online BPI Building Envelope test. This course teaches not only how to analyze a home, but the importance of building performance analysis. ONTILITY emphasizes the fact that every building is unique and the importance of recognizing building performance problems and understanding their root cause. The course focuses on the building as a system. Topics include techniques for enhancing energy efficiency, health and safety considerations, building envelope and mechanical systems performance and the use of industry accepted testing and work scope procedures as set by the Building Performance Institute.

This course by itself DOES NOT complete the BPI Building Envelope Certification. Final Certification requires the completion of E-110 BPI Field Test Proctoring.

• E-820 - Introduction to Energy Efficiency
• E-821 - Blower Door & Duct Blaster Training
• E-824 ‚Äì Rem / Rate ‚Äì Standard Course
• E-823 ‚Äì Combustion Safety

Success will depend in part on your ability to learn and retain information in a short period of time. Required math skills include calculating area and volume (Geometric formulas) and solving basic Algebra formals. To achieve a passing score on the BPI certification exam, you must have complete knowledge of building science, testing procedures, and all aspects of the home as a system.

Course Objectives

Upon Completion of this course, the student will have the ability to:

• Describe how the BPI Building Envelope system works
• Demonstrate processes used for the discovery of ventilation requirements and health and safety hazards are in the home
• Describe how the house works as a system.
• Describe practical ways to accomplish required energy efficiency improvements.

Student Evaluation

Student performance is evaluated on the basis of:

• Class participation
• Lab participation
• Completion of assignments
• Attendance

Attendance Policy

It is expected that students will attend scheduled classes regularly and on time. If an absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to make up all missed work. Students, who must withdraw from a class, will receive credit for work completed and may complete the course at a later date with instructor approval. Attendance will be tracked and maintained for various reporting purposes.

Accreditation and Evaluation

The curriculum for this course is based on the Building Performance Institute Standards and the course is accredited by (BPI). In keeping with the standards of this accreditation, students are encouraged to provide informal feedback throughout the course. A survey is distributed to students on the last day of class whereby students are asked to evaluate the class and the instructor. This feedback is used to create an on-going professional development plan for instructors and to inform course improvements.
